I have been building model railroads as long as I can remember. Here are some throwback pictures from the 2000’s. The tower crossing operator was never lonely. There was always plenty of trains passing by his station. The GN steamer going across the diamond. I experimented with barcoding during the early 2000’s. That silver “dot” in the middle of the crossing is a barcode reader that would identify the train’s location on a computer. I also used this as a “milepost.” As the trains passed over it repeatedly making laps, a counter kept track of how many times and it would tell where the train was in the real world. Each lap constituted a mile for simplicity. Hauling grain has always been a staple of the model railroads I build.
